ART FOR THE HEART

On April 30, more than 55 artists recently donated their work for a very special fundraising event at Center f or the Arts to benefit Hospitality House. Art for the Heart, a concept created by local artists Eileen Blodgett and LeeAnn Brook, began last winter as an invitation to our area artists to support Hospitality House.
“We started with nothing but the idea, inspired by the shelter’s logo, and before long, through the generosity of artists, individuals and businesses, we had an event,” said Blodgett.
“We thought we might raise $5,000 for Hospitality House and call it a success,” added. “But the evening’s auction event, which featured art, wine, chocolate and refreshments, brought in nearly $12,000.”
“The artists came through with wonderful donations and the community came through and took advantage of this opportunity. We owe a million thanks to the artists who participated, once again showing us the power of the arts in our community,” Blodgett added.
Among some of the most prized art pieces was a very limited edition screen print by Rebecca Bleau, created specially for the event. Bleau offered to donate another two prints to match the top bidders.
A large and colorful quilt set, made by Jim McQuiston’s 6th grade class at Seven Hills School, also brought in top bids, raising nearly $900. Art donations from Georg Kickinger, Deborah Bridges and Sybil Shane were among the most popular items.
Janice O’Brien, vice president for Hospitality House, reminded attendees that as they gathered to celebrate and raise funds, homeless guests were experiencing their last night in an area church. April 30 marked the season’s final night for the community’s shelter program, which runs from October to May.
During the “warm” season, Hospitality House opens its Grass Valley Welcome Center from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. for lunch, showers, and limited services.
“By raising money and awareness, we can continue to offer hope, compassion and shelter to those in need,” said O’Brien. “Hospitality House greatly appreciates the support provided by this community and especially those who made Art for the Heart such a success.”

The quilt they made raised nearly $900.

A NIGHT OF GIVING  ~ A Musical Benefit for Hospitality House
Mikail Graham--composer, performer, events promoter and KVMR broadcaster--is a hero to the homeless in Nevada County.

His passion for those in need of shelter prompted him to produce December’s “Night of Giving: A Benefit for Hospitality House,” the nonprofit’s biggest fundraiser in its two years of operation. Raising more than $10,000, the event featured dozens of musical and spoken word performers and attracted hundreds of attendees who generously gave to the nonprofit’s cause. Graham and his company, Nevada City Music Events, coordinated the benefit and donated all proceeds to Hospitality House.

Graham, with family roots in Nevada County dating back to 1849, is a well-known musician who in 1997 produced and mixed the CD “Loafing Glory” for folk legend Utah Phillips, a work that was nominated for an award by the National American Independent Record Distributors. He is co-founder of emagic Inc., now owned by Apple computers, and has served as design consultant for many musical technology companies such as BIAS, digidesign, Eventide, Lexicon and ZOOM. He is also co-founder of Nevada City Music Events, www.nevadacitymusicevents.com,
which brings a wide range of cultural and music events to the county.

Hospitality House wants to thank Mikail for his boundless generosity and applauds his devotion to the needs of the homeless in Nevada County.
